Message lead, and then later got rid of MTBE in the late 2000s, they had to use something else to get octane cheaply. They ended up using either really harsh solvents (aromatics), or ethanol. The aromatics caused problems, but the oil industry produced the aromatics, so they blamed the ethanol. It was a pretty easy sell, since people thought "pure gas" was the same old stuff they had been buying for years. It wasn't and isn't. I wouldn't put it in anything I own. My Z has been running on at least 25% ethanol since 2010. Before that I used "pure gas" and of course had to replace the injectors.
